Donahies Community School Awards Night

Outstanding students of the Donahies Community School were recently honoured at the school’s Awards Evening.

The awards presented recognised achievement in all areas of school life from the academic to the sporting as well as humanitarian, arts and cultural endeavours.

The main award of the night was presented to Orla Gilheaney from the Leaving Certificate class of 2010 who was presented with a bursary in recognition of her outstanding results. Orla, who obtained 570 points in her Leaving Certificate, is now studying Speech and Language Therapy at Trinity College Dublin.  She has also been awarded an Entrance Exhibition Award by Trinity College in recognition of the high levels achieved in the School Leaving Examinations.  Several other students received awards for performance in the Junior and Leaving Certificates.

A host of dignitaries and special guests attended the evening including the Guest of Honour, Dr John Barry, Reader of History and Politics at Queens University Belfast.

Dr. Barry, a leading academic and political figure as well as environmental activist is a past pupil of the school.

He fondly recalled the time he spent there as a pupil and encouraged the assembled students attending the ceremony to take full advantage of the educational opportunities offered to them.

Popular radio personality Mr George Hook also took time out of his busy schedule to present awards to students who have participated in the Donahies Romania Project and spoke of his appreciation for the huge commitment shown by pupils, teachers and the wider community of the Donahies to this project.
