Donahies Community School Awards Night
Outstanding
students of the Donahies Community School were recently honoured at the
school’s Awards Evening.
The main
award of the night was presented to Orla Gilheaney from the Leaving Certificate
class of 2010 who was presented with a bursary in recognition of her outstanding
results. Orla, who obtained 570 points in her Leaving Certificate, is now
studying Speech and Language Therapy at Trinity College Dublin.
She has also been awarded an Entrance Exhibition Award by Trinity College
in recognition of the high levels achieved in the School Leaving Examinations.
Several other students received awards for performance in the Junior and
Leaving Certificates.
A host
of dignitaries and special guests attended the evening including the Guest of
Honour, Dr John Barry, Reader of History and Politics at Queens University
Belfast.
Dr.
Barry, a leading academic and political figure as well as environmental activist
is a past pupil of the school.
He
fondly recalled the time he spent there as a pupil and encouraged the assembled
students attending the ceremony to take full advantage of the educational
opportunities offered to them.
Popular
radio personality Mr George Hook also took time out of his busy schedule to
present awards to students who have participated in the Donahies Romania Project
and spoke of his appreciation for the huge commitment shown by pupils, teachers
and the wider community of the Donahies to this project.
