The
Donahies means churches. It was named this as it is located on the site of an
ancient abbey. Our crest shows the churches. It also shows the torch, which is a
symbol for learning, and a rooster. The rooster symbolises resurrection, a new
school and a new beginning. The
students of the Donahies Community School originated from St. Canices. As there
was no other school in locality, this was used as a temporary basis while the
Donahies was being built. However, the Department of Education broke their
schedule and the school was not built on time. This caused uproar amongst quite
a lot of the parents and teachers, as not only were conditions in St. Canices
appalling, but it was hard to get to. So students spent more of their time toing
and froing then actually learning. Eventually
the school was built. Mr. Hickey was the first principal and Mr. Murphy was the
first vice principal. In 1978, 500 pupils and 30 teachers moved into this
partially built school on Streamville road. The
Donahies Community School has come a long way since then. It has developed
rapidly and successfully and has thrived in extracurricular activities. We hope
it will continue doing so! |
