Physical Education in The Donahies Community School

Here at the Donahies Community School physical education is an essential educational program. It is based on physical activities undertaken in an active, caring, supportive and non-threatening atmosphere in which every student is challenged and successful. Students with disabilities are provided with a learning environment that is modified, when necessary, to allow for maximum participation.

Physical Education is based upon the accomplishment of knowledge and skills that are the foundation for engaging in physical activity. However, the mere attainment of knowledge and skills is not enough. The mission of Physical Education is to empower all students to sustain regular, lifelong physical activity as a foundation for a healthy, productive and fulfilling life.

The study of physical education can be linked to the whole school aims, thereby assisting in the full development of the pupil. Physical education and Games, through the focusing on the body aims to develop control, co ordination, awareness, appreciation and knowledge of the body in a range of experiences and worthwhile activities.

The developments of social skills that are focused on are

  1. The ability to work with others
  2. The ability to relate to others
  3. The ability to accept authority
  4. The ability to accept positive criticism
  5. The ability to complete and display work in front of others

The physical education and games department recognises the role of the physical activity in modern society and the need for pupils to be aware of local leisure opportunities. The aim of the physical education teachers here at The Donahies Community School is to support the extensive extra curricular programme for many different physical activities.
